갑자기 CAT(컴퓨터 보조 번역)의 범위에 대해 궁금하여 조금 검색해보았습니다.

Computer-assisted translation, computer-aided translation or CAT is a form of language translation in which a human translator uses computer hardware to support and facilitate the translation process.
이렇게 보면 컴퓨터 하드웨어를 사용하는 모든 번역이 CAT의 범주에 속하는 것 같습니다. 하지만 범위에 대해서 별도로 정의해놓았습니다.
Computer-assisted translation is a broad and imprecise term covering a range of tools, from the fairly simple to the complicated. These can include:
- 번역 메모리(TM) 툴: Translation memory tools (TM tools), consisting of a database of text segments in a source language and their translations in one or more target languages.
- 맞춤법 검사기: Spell checkers, either built into word processing software, or add-on programs
- 문법 검사기: Grammar checkers, again either built into word processing software, or add-on programs
- 용어 관리 프로그램: Terminology managers, which allow translators to manage their own terminology bank in an electronic form. This can range from a simple table created in the translator's word processing software or spreadsheet, a database created in a program such as FileMaker Pro or, for more robust (and more expensive) solutions, specialized software packages such as SDL MultiTerm, LogiTerm, Termex, TermWeb, etc.
- 전자 사전: Electronic dictionaries, either unilingual or bilingual, also known as dictorobotary
- 용어 DB: Terminology databases, either on the host computer or accessible through the Internet, such as TERMIUM Plus or Grand dictionnaire terminologique from the Office québécois de la langue française
- 텍스트 검색 툴: Full-text search tools (or indexers), which allow the user to query already translated texts or reference documents of various kinds. Some such indexers are ISYS Search Software, dtSearch Desktop and Naturel
- Concordnace 툴: Concordancers, which are programs that retrieve instances of a word or an expression and their respective context in a monolingual, bilingual or multilingual corpus, such as a bitext or a translation memory
- 얼라이먼트 툴: Bitext aligners: tools that align a source text and its translation which can then be analyzed using a full-text search tool or a concordancer
- 프로젝트 관리 소프트웨어: Project management software that allows linguists to structure complex translation projects in a form of chain of tasks (often called "workflow"), assign the various tasks to different people, and track the progress of each of these tasks
협의의 의미로는 TM 툴이 CAT 툴과 동의어로 사용되지만, 광의의 의미로는 CAT 툴은 맞춤법 검사기, 용어 관리 프로그램, 전자 사전... 등이 모두 포함됩니다.
컴퓨터를 사용하는 모든 번역이 CAT라고 하는 것은 지나친 것 같습니다. 보통 번역업체에서 CAT를 물으면 트라도스 같은 CAT 툴을 사용하는지를 묻는 것입니다. CAT에 대한 질문에 "맞춤법 검사기"를 사용한다고 답하면 다시는 연락을 받지 못하게 될 것입니다.
그리고 CAT는 기계가 직접 번역하는 기계번역(Machine Translation)과 달리 인간이 번역하는 인간번역(Human Translation)에 해당합니다.
앞으로의 번역은 기계번역과 인간번역이 결합되는 방향으로 나아가겠지만 점차 기계번역이 주도권을 쥐고 번역은 기계가 하고 교정/검수는 인간이 하게 될 것 같습니다.
